Losing a tooth or several teeth does more than change your smile. It can deeply affect how you feel about yourself. Many of our patients tell us it’s not just the physical gap that bothers them, but the impact on their confidence and well-being.

At Dr. Norman A. Orschel’s Clinic in Aurora, we understand how important it is to restore both your smile and your self-assurance. That’s why we offer expert dental implant procedures, providing natural-looking, long-lasting solutions tailored to your needs. Whether you’re considering dental implants for the first time or just curious about the process, this guide will walk you through what to expect and answer some of the most common questions we hear every day.

What Are Dental Implants and When Should You Consider Them?

Dental implants are small, strong posts made of titanium that are placed into your jawbone during a simple surgery. They act like artificial roots for new teeth. Over time, the implant will naturally bond to your bone. Once it’s secure, a custom-made crown (a replacement tooth) is attached, giving you a natural-looking smile.

You might consider a dental implant if you’ve lost one or more teeth due to injury, decay, or disease. They’re also a good option if you’re struggling with ill-fitting dentures, want to prevent bone loss and maintain your facial structure, or prefer a stable, permanent alternative to bridges or removable dentures.

From What Age Can You Get a Dental Implant?

Generally, dental implants are recommended for adults aged 18 and older, once the jawbone has stopped growing. However, age isn’t the only factor. Having good oral and overall health is also necessary for implant placement and healing to be successful.

The Dental Implant Procedure: What to Expect?

At Dr. Orschel’s Clinic, the journey to your new smile is carefully planned and executed for optimal results.

1.     Comprehensive Assessment: Your first visit includes a detailed dental exam, digital X-rays, and 3D imaging to evaluate bone density and structure.

2.     Preparation: If your jawbone needs reinforcement, a bone graft may be recommended.

3.     Implant Placement: The titanium implant is surgically placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia for comfort.

4.     Healing Period: Over three to six months, the implant fuses with the bone. Temporary teeth may be provided during this phase.

5.     Final Restoration: Once healed, an abutment is placed on the implant, followed by a custom-made crown to complete your smile.

Is the procedure painful?

Most patients report minimal discomfort during and after the procedure, often describing it as easier than a tooth extraction. Any post-operative soreness is typically managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

Life with Dental Implants: Care and Maintenance

Maintaining dental implants is simple and very similar to caring for natural teeth. You should brush twice daily using a soft-bristle toothbrush and floss daily to keep the area around the implant clean and healthy. It’s also important to attend regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings to ensure everything stays in great condition. With proper care, dental implants can last for decades, or even a lifetime, making them a long-term, reliable investment in your oral health.

Beyond dental implants, our clinic offers a full range of dental services to support your oral health journey. Whether you need cosmetic dentistry to enhance your smile, tooth-coloured fillings and tooth bonding to repair minor damage, or dental crowns to protect weakened teeth, we have you covered. We also provide night guards to protect against teeth grinding, tooth extractions when necessary, and comprehensive general dentistry to keep your mouth healthy and pain-free.
